R-PHS Students Earn Trip to Washington D.C.

Washington, DC, May 18, 2016- SIFMA and the SIFMA Foundation today congratulate all the

participants of the 13th Annual Stock Market Game ™ -Capitol Hill Challenge ™ (CHC) national program and announce the 10 winning teams who have won a trip to Washington, DC, and will be recognized at an Awards Reception on Capitol Hill on June 15th.  This year, for the third consecutive year, 100% of Congress participated and SIFMA gives special recognition to the over 60 members of Congress who took the time to visit their local schools and engage with the students on financial education and role of government in our capital markets.

This 14-week challenge organizes teams of middle and high school students by congressional district and state and teaches the importance of saving and investing, while simultaneously promoting a better understanding of our government. Teams invest a hypothetical $100,000 in listed stocks, bonds, and mutual funds and learn the value of the capital markets as they work together to maximize the return of their portfolios.

Since the Capitol Hill Challenge began in 2004, 3,272 Members of Congress matches have been made to schools reaching 90,000 students. Middle and high school students from all 50 states, Guam, Puerto Rico, and the District of Columbia are participating in this year’s competition. “This program provides critical educational experiences to young people across America, emphasizing underserved schools and enabling students who otherwise might not be exposed to the capital markets to gain insights that lead to their success,” said Melanie Mortimer, President of the SIFMA Foundation. “Capitol Hill Challenge students experience the positive compounding effect of understanding, from an early age, how finance, civics and government touch their lives.”

R-PHS Stock Challenge Team (L-R):  Kaylah Vande Guchte, Shelbi Adams, Emily Bride, Melissa Powell, Sydney Colgrove and Mr. Corbin

Mr. Cobin had this to share, “It has been so amazing to see these young adults grow in their financial literacy. At the beginning of the year they didn’t even know what a portfolio was, now they are capable of trading in sophisticated securities such as triple levered Exchange Traded Funds.”

Shelbi Adams’ comments included, “I am so glad I get this opportunity to travel to Washington DC with my classmates. We worked hard and I can’t wait to visit all the monuments and meet the other teams.”

Teammate Melissa Powell’s insights; “Finishing sixth in the nation out of 4300 teams is an amazing feeling. I didn’t think we were going to make it in, but then we jumped up to eighteenth place and it motivated us even more. To make this all even better, this will be my first time going to DC and the first time to ever fly. Such a great way to end my senior year here at RP.”

Emily Bride commented,
This Capital Hill Challenge definitely had a learning curve to it; it required split second thinking, and a lot of prayers of stocks going the direction (either up or down) we hoped. With the time spent into researching suitable ETFs, and watching the numbers and percentages change on a daily basis in the stock market, I’m very happy with the outcome my team and I have gotten from this experience. We’re very excited to be representing Rocket City in Washington D.C.”

Although Sydney Colgrove cannot attend with her teammates due to a planned trip to Europe, she shared her thoughts, “This experience has taught me so much about the Stock Market, and how it is so beneficial to our futures. I am very proud of my team, and although I will not be able to attend, I hope that my teammates will have a great time in D.C.”

Finally, Kaylah Vande Gutche’s commented, Traveling to D.C. with these girls is going to be a blast. We are looking forward to this experience, site seeing, learning more about the stock market and meeting the experts and other teams. Getting to learn about the stock market was a lot of fun and is going to be very beneficial in our future. We are so excited that all our hard work has paid off and extremely thankful for this opportunity.

Congratulations and enjoy your well-deserved trip to our nation’s capital!
