The Reeths-Puffer wrestling team captured its second-consecutive district title with a 58-18 win over rival Muskegon in Wednesday’s Division 2 district tournament at Spring Lake.
Reeths-Puffer earned a berth in the district finals with a 63-13 win over Spring Lake, while Muskegon clinched a spot in the title match with a 52-30 victory against Fruitport.
“We wrestled really well in the second match,” Reeths-Puffer assistant coach Scott Loss said. “After getting chewed out following the Spring Lake match, they stepped up. “We’re loaded at the middle and upper weights, and I thought we matched up better with Muskegon.”
Reeths-Puffer swept the weight class from 145 to 215 pounds, and four Rockets earned pins, including Hunter Schaub (130), Mike Weissert (135), Brendon Ransom (145) and Tylor Skinner (215).
Muskegon’s Dovel Wilson (285) and Raiquan Dowdell (140) recorded the Big Reds two wins, with each earning a first-period pin.
Reeths-Puffer advances to the regional tournament on Wednesday, Feb. 17, where the Rockets meet undefeated Sparta in the semifinals.
“We’re going to have to be in ‘go’ mode next week and jump out on Sparta early,” Loss said. “They’re loaded from top to bottom, so there will be a lot of key matches.
“A lot of the younger guys will have to step up and avoid getting pinned.”
