College Awareness A Priority at R-PHS

The first week of November is known in Michigan as “College Application Week.”  Our counseling office was bustling with activity as counselors planned activities and met with seniors to discuss their post-secondary plans.

In the month leading up to College Application Week, counselors had a featured “College Fact of the Day” in the morning announcements to get students thinking ahead about such things as college selection, financial aid, scholarships, and spotlights on particular Michigan colleges.

During College Application Week, the counseling office had several college-related contests for students with prizes for the winners.  Students had the opportunity to identify college mascots, dress in favorite college colors, and identify school songs among others.

The most important part of College Application Week in our counseling office was applying for college!  Counselors called seniors who had not yet applied to college to their offices and discussed with them their options.  If a student wanted to apply to a college, counselors had laptop computers available and students could apply on the spot!  During the week, counselors assisted a total of 148 seniors apply for college!   Added to our 76 students who had applied prior to College Application Week, this brings our current total to 224 students (out of 284 in the senior class) who has successfully completed a college application.

Seniors that have launched their college plans

Great job, counselors, and great job to our students who are developing their post-secondary plan!
